 Meeting Minutes
 July 5, 2007
 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

1. Members present: Kristin Hines, Roger Masenthin, Gail Norton, Ed Elam, Glenda Harvey, Ron Temaat, Gary Headrick, LeAnn Seiler
2. Agenda: Roger was added under new business.
3. Minutes: Approved as presented.
4. Financial Report –

a. Kristin read the treasurer’s report. Checking account balance is $2,126.52. There was 1 Windbreak expense of $43.46 for food at a meeting. A Membership certificate will be presented to High Plains Journal after the meeting. Report is approved as presented.

5. Coordinator’s Report: Roger highlighted the availability of energy efficiency grants through Rural Development. We would like Rural Development to put together a packet with application info and references for RC&D to give possible applicants. NRCS reorganization, moving from 5 to 3 areas. Dan Meyerhoff is our area supervisor. We must have our 2008 POW draft to Salina by October. Dollie will email to Glenda, Gail, Rodger, and Kristin for work.

6. Projects & Activities Update:

a. Farm Safety Day – Nothing to report

b. Adopt-a-Bike – Bikes are scheduled for delivery on July 13. BBBS of Ford County, Dodge City Public Library, Rotary, and Youthville helped distribute bikes. DCPD DARE program donated helmets for children w/o helmets receiving bikes. LeAnn shared about the Safe Routes to School program going on in Hodgeman County.

c. Windbreak Renovation – Ron reported not many attended renovation meeting in mid-May. Bob Atchison concerned we maintain momentum. More local support w/in conservation districts needed. Several council members expressed willingness to help finish inventories and move project to assessment phase.

d. FHFH – State group is interested in maintaining and maybe moving further west. Gail is calling McInteer and T&T lockers; we expect numbers to be comparable at $65/deer reimbursement rate.

e. Alzheimer’s Memory Walk – DeAnn Rickett sent an email update. It was read. There was an article in the SW Daily Times.


7. Old Business – all but following items were tabled

a. Webpage and Newsletter – Nothing to report.

b. Walk-In Birding – Tom Flowers has adequate number of producers with acreage if Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will do contract to a pilot area or acreages. He is willing to host a meeting for the pilot project for FY 2008. Ron will call the state biologist to help push project.

c. See Treasurer’s Report bullet.

d. Secretary of Ag Johanns received our update; secretary is not authorizing new RC&Ds w/o new funding. Push is for full funding for those with applications.

8. New Business

a. Annual Meeting: will be held as a regular meeting on November 1 at 1:00 pm. Someone will bring refreshments and location is TBA.

b. State RC&D meeting: Kristin is only one possibly able to attend. Gail moves to authorize up to $110 to pay for registration to state conference; Rodger DeGarmo seconded; motion passed.

c. Roger shared USDA Rural Development – Community Development Academy. Starts July 11 in Newton.

d. Roger received information from Fermata out of TX. They want to develop a core group and RC&D was mentioned as a possibility for a representative. Roger is forwarding out the Fermata Western KS Strategy Report.
