Coronado Crossing RC&D Assists with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry Program
Seven food banks in five southwestern Kansas counties were able to provide
a much needed source of protein to those in need through the Farmers & Hunters
Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) program sponsored by Coronado Crossing Resource Conservation
& Development (RC&D) group and the Kansas FHFH Program. The program
provided 1032 pounds of ground
deer meat from 16 deer donated to the Coronado Crossing FHFH project. T &
T Processing in Fowler and McInteer Locker in Minneola participated in the FHFH
project for the 2006-2007 hunting season by processing the donated deer. The
frozen ground meat was made available free of cost to the following local food
banks or feeding programs: Tabitha House VAM,
Clark County; Manna House, Dodge City; Meade County Food Bank; Jetmore Methodist
Church food bank; Liberal Methodist Care Center; New Hope, Dodge City; and Stepping
Stones, Liberal. Donations from churches, clubs, businesses and individuals
help cover the costs of processing, packaging and freezing of the meat so there
is no cost to the hunter. The need to raise funds to support the program and
pay the processing costs is great, but everyone can help... by sending donations
of $25 or more to: Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry Project, in care of
Kristin Hodges, Treas. Coronado Crossing RC&D, 2817 CR E, Bucklin 67834.
With your support the program can be expanded in the future. Contributions to
FHFH are tax deductible. The program, in its sixth year for the State of Kansas
receives assistance from other Kansas RC&D Councils across the state and
the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Each year, the program has grown.
Coronado Crossing RC&D and the FHFH project service area includes Clark,
Ford, Gray, Haskell, Hodgeman, Meade and Seward Counties. The Council is excited
to expand the FHFH program for the 2007-2008 hunting season. Meat processors
or food banks interested in participating are invited to provide contact information
by calling Acting Coordinator, Roger Masenthin at the Sunflower RC&D Area,
Inc. office, 620-896-7378 or the District Conservationist in the above mentioned
counties.
